Council of Europe pushes access to school for LGBTI children

1 May 2016 - In January, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has adopted a resolution on access to school "for all children". A trending aspect is the explicit mention of LGBTI children. Commonly, it is quite taboo on the international level to discuss sexual diversity in relation to education. Another new aspect is that the Council does not only push for access, but also says this should be done by providing objective information - which is a criterion for the quality of the content of education, rather than just passive "access" to schools.

Jehovah's Witnesses train children to sabotage human rights education

7 May 2016 - The Jehovah's Witnesses website has published a video that encourages small children to sabotage human rights education. The video, called "One men and one women" teaches their children that the teacher is wrong in saying that people can choose their own relationship. It also encourages them to challenge children from rainbow families and to practice with their parents how they can do this most effectively. It even implies LGB couples should be compared with terrorists.

NETHERLANDS: NO ISOLATION LGBT STUDENTS

Isolating LGBT students is bad practice

19 April 2016 - Early April a male student of a school in the Netherlands was taken out of his classes and taught separately "for his own protection". The student Maicke van der Belt came out in school and severely bullied by his fellow students. After strong public protests that isolating the victim rather than the perpetrators is bad practice, the principal decided to return him to his classes. The local expertise centre on LGBT issues in schools call for school guidelines on how to deal with such concrete situations.

NETHERLANDS: IDAHOT CALL TO SCHOOLS

Dutch education alliance calls upon schools to start team discussion on sexual diversity

11 May 2016 - The Dutch national gay/straight education alliance has sent a mail to all schools in the Netherlands requesting them to have a team discussion on sexual diversity. The call is on the occasion of the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (#IDAHOT2016) next week.
