April 10, 2009 - LGBT Organisation Colombia Diversa has been approached by the Colombian Police Department to help in developing training modules for the Colombian Police Force on LGBT issues. Colombia Diversa has consulted GALE for information on similar trainings.

Colombia Diversa is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion of the rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgendered (LGBT) persons in Colombia. It was founded in Bogota in 2004.
It was established after an in-depth analysis of the failure of legislation in the Colombian Senate that would have recognized the rights of same-sex partners.

Colombia Diversa - mission

Colombia Diversa promotes the complete inclusion and respect for rights, recognition and mobilization of the LGBT community in the economic, social, political and cultural spheres, in order to help build a democratic, modern and fair Colombia.

Colombia Diversa - objectives

  1. Promote the awareness, defense and development of LGBT rights.
  2. Positively transform the perception of LGBT persons in Colombian society.
  3. Strengthen the political organization and capacity of the LGBT sector.

Training on LGBT issues

Colombia Diversa has been approached by the head of the Colombian Police Department to see how they can help in developing modules to train all Colombian Police Force on LGBT issues. This would probably involve training on two aspects:

  1. how to deal with LGBT citizens (and their issues)
  2. how to deal with lesbian and gay policemen and women within the Colombian Police force.

Colombia Diversa has in its turn consulted GALE for support in collecting best practice information on training programmes for Police Forces.
